Travel, Food and the Pursuit of Happiness

‘Tis the season for family vacations, spring break trips and all the food that comes with it. To say it’s easy to overeat while on vacation is an understatement for most, especially if you are trying to eat healthy. March brings spring break which is when everyone is ready to break out their bikinis and have a beach-ready body, but also binge on delicious food while traveling. Merrick Surgical is here to provide you with some tips on how to eat healthy no matter where you are or who you’re with.

Eating healthy is often easier said than done. We typically know what is and is not good for our bodies, but resisting the temptation is half the battle, especially when you are surrounded by delicious restaurants that make eating poorly easy. Below are a few tips and tricks to have up your sleeve so that you can be sure to maintain a healthy diet and limit the intake of unhealthy food while still enjoying your vacation.

Healthy Eating Tips:

  • Eat before you go out: By eating before you leave for your next adventure, you can avoid the temptations of unhealthy options while you are out and about. This will help your wallet too!
  • Limit alcohol: If your family and friends are ones that enjoy drinking, try bringing a healthy alternative for a drink to help resist the temptation.
  • Stay out of the kitchen: A great alternative is to stay home and cook your own delicious meals. Remember to stay out of the kitchen when you’re not cooking to avoid snacking before and after the meal.
  • Portion: Opt for the lunch or children’s size meals to limit portion size to help avoid overeating.
  • Make your plate colorful: This is something we hear often, but for good reason. Include all colors on your plate and save a small amount of space for the sweet treat you can’t resist. Moderation is key and filling up with veggies and fruits prior to the bread and potatoes will have you thanking yourself later when you are feeling great.

These are just a few ways that one can maintain their healthy goal of eating well. It’s vital to know that while it’s important to eat healthy, eating things that aren’t so good for you one day shouldn’t keep you down. Everyone splurges sometimes! Make sure you bounce right back into your routine. Even if you cave and fall off the wagon for a bit, it is never too late to start eating right.

It’s also good to keep in mind that exercise and safety are important parts of your health and are things you don’t want to forget about, even when you’re eating right. If you’re needing the equipment to get around and live an active life, reach out to Merrick Surgical for help. With that, we want to wish you the best of luck in improving and maintaining your health and we hope you have a great vacation!
