How to Safely Get Rid of Edema

How to Safely Get Rid of Edema

Depending on the severity of your edema, it may be possible to use home remedies and techniques to get rid of it without the need for medication. We’re here to go over some safe and simple ways to reduce edema in the comfort of your own home. Make sure you talk to your doctor about which remedies are right for you.

1. Elevation

The most common way people attempt to get rid of edema is to elevate the legs, but this technique is only effective if you do it properly. Your ankles or whatever part of your body is swollen needs to be elevated above the level of your heart. This should be done several times throughout the day and can be easily incorporated into your daytime naps or overnight as you sleep.

2. Compression

Another quick way to get rid of edema is to wear compression stockings. These put pressure on the area in order to prevent fluid retention in your tissue. There are stockings designed specifically for men or women in a variety of lengths and colors. You can also decide how much support you want depending on the severity of your swelling and your doctor’s recommendations.

3. Movement

One of the best things you can do for your body if you’re experiencing edema is to move and use the muscles in your body that are affected by the edema. These exercises will help pump excess fluid back to the heart, therefore reducing the amount of fluid in your ankles, legs or other swollen areas of the body.

4. Diet Adjustments

A common mistake people make is consuming more salt than necessary which can worsen swelling by increasing fluid retention. Limiting the amount of salt that you consume may allow you to see positive changes in your edema symptoms.

5. Pressure

Sometimes it helps to massage the swollen area so you can move the excess fluid out. Make sure you use firm pressure but be careful not to cause pain. Read below for a quick guide for giving a lymphatic massage effectively:

  • Start massaging at the furthest point away from the affected area - so if your edema is in your ankles, start at the upper part of your legs.
  • Put one hand on the inside of your leg and the other on the back of your leg.
  • Gently stretch your skin up and out from the inside of your leg towards your hip.
  • Repeat this while working your way down until you get to your knee.
  • Once you get to your knee, stretch your skin up towards your armpit.
  • Repeat this lymphatic massage about 10 times.
