Cancer Prevention: Here’s What You Need to Know

"When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on," stated Franklin D. Roosevelt. We are always amazed at the perseverance that those with cancer and their loved ones have. That’s why we want to take the opportunity to talk about how you and your loved ones can take preventative measures to decrease the risks of cancer.

Establish a Healthy Diet

You are likely already familiar with the food pyramid and what your average caloric intake should be. Take it a step further by choosing foods that are great for reducing cancer risk and progression. Keep an eye out for: apples, carrots, berries, broccoli, fatty fish and kale.

Exercise

Maintaining strength and fitness will set the stage for a more enjoyable life. A consistent exercise regimen has been shown to play a positive role in reducing breast cancer. Women who are at a weight recommended by their doctor are also less likely to develop breast cancer.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking is not a healthy choice for anyone and alcohol consumption should be limited to reduce cancer risks. The more either of these are consumed, the greater the risk of developing cancer.

Know Your History

Unfortunately, family history plays a role in the chances of certain cancers. Women are at a higher risk of breast cancer if their mother or sisters have cancer or even if male family members have prostate or breast cancer. Know your history and ask your doctor about early detection for any kind of cancer.

We also want to note that at this time, there are no guaranteed ways to prevent cancer. However, choosing healthy behaviors will help to reduce the risks and make you feel better overall.

Join us in spreading awareness for cancer this month and every month! If you or a loved one is needing help around your home due to this terrible disease, reach out for help today. We’re here for you.
